Day 1 (Getting to know the surroundings)
  • Arrived in the neighborhood Las Casitas in Don Juan and got placed into our host families.
  • We played with the kids, familiarized ourselves with the surroundings, ate our first Dominican meals.
  • In the afternoon we visited Father Ron’s (our primary in-country contact) house, which is located directly next to the school.
  • Briefly walked around the school.
Day 2 (Water testing & measurements)
  • Began collecting water from different locations within the school (kitchen, hand-washing station, outside faucet, cisterns).
  • Conducted chemical tests using equipment donated by Hach.
  • Prepared water samples for incubation that will be used in biological testing. These were taped onto Eva & Vivian’s stomachs for about 18 hours.
  • Took measurements of the school grounds and made more detailed drawings.
  • Tested for lead on faucet surfaces.
Day 3 (Visit Tiven’s communities)
  • Took the bus to Tiven’s (peace corp representative) community and conducted tests on their well.
  • Took truck to another community  and hiked up to examine their foundations for a water system.
  • Looked at water samples under black light and confirmed that there was no ecoli.
  • In the afternoon we took further measurements of the school & discussed design plans.
Day 4 (Design discussions)
  • Checked on coliform colonies and found that they were present.
  • Discussed more design.
  • Took a video & photos of the inside of the cisterns.
