Tanzania
Naramat, Tanzania - Water Supply Project

Our Mission

As a result of reservoir collapse near a small village in northern Tanzania, our chapter proposes to drill a well to increase water accessibility. This project will require over $30,000 total to fund the drilling, well construction, and travel costs. Completing this project will provide a sustainable solution to water insecurity that will improve health, safety, and well-being for the community for years to come.

The Community

Naramat is a remote village north of Handeni, Tanga in Tanzania that consists of a small Maasai population of over 4000 men, women, and children. For many years, this community has relied on a reservoir about 6 kilometers away from the settlement as their main source of water. With the increase of global warming and average temperature, however, the open water source remains dried out for about 8 months each year causing a severe water shortage during this dry season (Figures 1 and 2). Every morning, the women and children travel by foot, bike, or livestock to the reservoir where they collect water in small buckets and tanks to carry back to the village. This untreated water is then shared within the community and used for all purposes of daily life, including cooking, bathing, agriculture, and drinking. The exact quality of the water is unknown, however many of the villagers suspect that it is unsafe.

Our Plan

Based on the information we have gathered so far, we believe that a borehole/well is the best alternative for the community.  In upcoming months we will send a team of ~8 students and our Responsible Engineer in charge for an implementation trip.
The assessment trip will be followed by the design of our water purification system. Soon after we will travel to the community to implement our designs on our Implementation trip. In the following years, we will improve our designs and attempt to solve other issues the community is facing.
